How to Plant a Bare Root Jujube Tree
Jujube trees are small, deciduous fruit trees that originate from Asia. They produce a small, sweet fruit that is often eaten dried. If you are interested in growing jujubes in your garden, planting bare root trees is an easy and affordable way to get started. Here's how to plant a bare root jujube tree:
Choose the Right Location
Jujube trees require a lot of sunlight and well-draining soil to thrive. Choose a location in your garden that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, and make sure the soil is loose and well-draining. If the soil is heavy and clay-like, consider amending it with sand or organic matter to improve drainage.
Prepare the Planting Hole
Dig a hole that is twice as wide and deep as the root ball of your bare root jujube tree. Make sure the hole is deep enough to accommodate the entire root system, but not so deep that the crown (the base of the tree trunk) will be buried.
Soak the Root System
Before planting the bare root jujube tree, soak the root system in a bucket of water for at least an hour. This will rehydrate the roots and reduce the stress of transplanting.
Plant the Tree
Place the bare root jujube tree in the center of the planting hole, making sure that the crown is at ground level. Spread the roots out evenly in the hole, and backfill with soil, tamping down gently around the base of the tree to eliminate any air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly to settle the soil.
Mulch and Water
Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the jujube tree, but not touching the trunk. This will help to retain moisture in the soil and prevent weed growth. Water the tree deeply once a week, or more frequently in hot, dry weather, to ensure that the roots remain moist.
Prune and Fertilize
After planting, prune the jujube tree back to a height of about 4-5 feet. This will encourage branching and a strong, bushy shape. Fertilize the tree with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season to promote healthy growth and fruit production.
With proper care and attention, your bare root jujube tree will quickly establish itself and produce a bountiful crop of sweet, delicious fruit!
