How to Plant a Plum Tree

Plum trees are a beautiful addition to any garden or orchard. They require moderate care and provide delicious fruit throughout the summer. Here are the steps to successfully plant a plum tree.

Location and Preparation

The first step is to choose an appropriate location for the tree. Plum trees require full sun exposure, meaning at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. They also need well-drained soil, which should be tested at the site to ensure it is well-balanced and not too acidic. Once the soil is tested and any necessary amendments are added, dig a hole that is at least two feet wider than the tree's root ball and deep enough so that the soil line from the nursery pot will be even with the soil line in the planting hole.

Planting and Support

After the hole is prepared, remove the tree from the pot and tease the roots out of their shape so that they grow outwards. Then, place the root ball in the planting hole and fill in the soil, gently compacting it as you go. Ensure the tree is straight, and then create a small berm of soil around the tree to hold water in place. Provide support for the tree using stakes, tied securely with tree ties.

Watering and Mulching

Water the newly planted tree frequently, at least once a week, adjusting as needed based on rainfall and the tree's growth. It is important to keep the soil evenly moist to avoid stressing the tree. Mulching is also beneficial as it helps retain moisture around the tree, regulates soil temperature, and provides nutrients to the tree as it decomposes. Apply a four-inch layer of mulch around the tree, keeping it two inches from the trunk to avoid rot.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune the tree during the dormant season to shape it and remove diseased or damaged branches. You can also prune the tree lightly in the summer after it finishes fruiting. Fertilizing may also be necessary but should be done sparingly to avoid overfeeding.

Harvesting and Enjoying

Plum trees typically produce fruit within three to five years after planting. Once the fruit is ripe, it should be harvested and enjoyed immediately or preserved for later use. Prune the tree lightly after harvesting to keep it healthy and ready for the next season.
