How to Plant a Large Tree: A Step-by-Step Guide

Planting a large tree may seem like a daunting task, but with the right preparation and technique, it can be done successfully. Whether you're adding a new tree to your landscape or replacing a damaged one, the following steps will guide you through the process.

Step 1: Choose the Right Tree and Location

Before you start planting, make sure you choose the right tree for your location. Consider the climate, soil type, and the amount of sun exposure the tree will receive. You should also take into account the mature size of the tree, ensuring it won't interfere with power lines or other structures.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools and Materials

You'll need a few tools and materials to plant a large tree, including a shovel, tree wrap, mulch, a hose, and stakes. It's important to have everything you need on hand before you start digging.

Step 3: Dig the Hole

The hole should be about two to three times the width of the root ball and at least as deep as the depth of the root ball. Make sure the hole is deep enough to allow the tree to sit slightly above the surrounding soil, so it doesn't sink over time.

Step 4: Prep the Root Ball

Remove any burlap, twine or wire holding the root ball together. If there is a wire basket, it can be cut away from the roots that have grown around it. Then, gently loosen any circling roots and spread them out in the hole to encourage outward growth.

Mulch can be applied after watering; it should be about 3 inch deep and cover the area where the roots are planted, but not against the trunk of the tree as this can cause moisture to become trapped and can lead to disease.

Staking is an optional step but is necessary if the tree is in a windy location or the soil is loose. Drive the stakes into the ground outside of the root ball and a few inches deep. Tie the tree trunk to the stakes using a soft material such as tree wrap, making sure the tie is loose enough to allow the tree to move with the breeze.

Monitor your newly planted large tree regularly, especially for the first year after planting. Make sure the soil remains consistently moist by watering when needed, but be sure not to overwater as this can cause root rot.
