How to Root a Money Tree Plant from a Cutting

Money tree plants are popular indoor plants that are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the household. They are easy to care for, but did you know that you can propagate more money tree plants from cuttings? Here's a guide on how to root a money tree plant from a cutting.

Step 1: Choose the Right Cutting

It's best to choose a healthy stem cutting from your money tree plant that has at least two nodes. Nodes are the spots where the leaves emerge from the stem. Make sure the cutting is around 4-6 inches long, and has no signs of damage, diseases, or pests.

Step 2: Remove the Bottom Leaves

With a sharp, sterilized tool, remove the bottom two to three leaves from the cutting. This is to prevent the leaves from rotting in the soil once you plant the cutting. Be careful not to damage the stem while doing this.

Step 3: Dip the Cutting in Rooting Hormone

You can buy rooting hormone at your local plant store or online. Dip the cut end of the stem in the rooting hormone powder, tapping off the excess. This will help stimulate root growth in the cutting.

Choose a small pot that's filled with well-draining soil, such as a mix of perlite and peat moss. Make a small hole in the soil, and gently place the cutting in the hole. Step 6: Provide Indirect Light

Put the pot in an area that receives bright but indirect light. Avoid placing the cutting in direct sunlight as this can scorch the leaves and dry out the soil. Keep the plastic bag or dome on the pot for a few weeks until the cutting starts to show new growth.

Step 7: Gradually Remove the Plastic Cover

After two to four weeks, you should start to see new growth on the cutting. At this point, you can gradually remove the plastic cover over the pot. Do this over a few days to prevent sudden shock to the cutting from the change in humidity and light.

Once your cutting has rooted and grown into a new money tree plant, it's time to care for it. Water it regularly, but make sure the soil is not waterlogged. Fertilize it every two to three months with a balanced fertilizer. Keep it in bright, indirect light, and rotate the pot every so often to ensure all sides of the plant receive enough light.
