How to Make a Pot for Your Plants
If you’re an avid gardener, you know that having the right pots to plant your green beauties is just as important as picking the best plants. However, store-bought pots can be expensive and may not necessarily match your aesthetic vision. A great solution? Making your own pots. Here’s how:
Materials
The materials you will need for this DIY project include:
Portland cement
Peat Moss
Perlite
Water
Large plastic container
Measuring cup
Trowel
Pottery clay slip or cooking spray (optional)
Extra-large and small dust or face mask
Steps
Follow these steps to make your own pot:
First, create a mix with 1 part Portland cement, 1 part peat moss, and 1 part perlite in a large plastic container. You can adjust the quantities depending on how big your pot will be. One part can be a cup or a bucket size depending on your preference.
Add water to the mix. The consistency of the mixture should be similar to mud. If you add too much water and it gets soupy, add more of the dry ingredients until it gets thicker again.
Take your large plastic container and coat it with a layer of pottery clay slip or cooking spray (non-stick spray) to prevent the mixture from sticking to the container. This step is optional, but it helps make the pot easier to remove later on.
Next, put on a dust or face mask to avoid inhaling any dust particles while you move on to the next step.
Take a small amount of the cement mix and start to pat it on the base of the container to make the bottom layer of the pot. You can also pour the mix into the container and spread it evenly using a trowel or a stick.
Once the bottom layer is set, you can start building the walls of the pot. Continue layering the mix on top of each previous layer, overlapping a bit at a time around the sides until you reach the desired height. Make sure the mixture is level as you go so that the pot isn't lopsided.
Smooth out the top edges and let the pot dry for at least 24 hours. Once it has dried in the container, remove the pot and let it dry on a flat surface for another day or two. If you're in a hurry, you can speed up the drying using a heat gun or a hairdryer.
Your pot is now ready to be decorated, painted, or used as it is. You can even add decorations to the pot by pressing objects like stones, shells, or pieces of glass into the walls before it dries completely.
Tips
Here are a few tips to keep in mind while making the pot:
Wear a dust mask while mixing the cement and other dry ingredients to avoid breathing in dust particles.
Make sure the mix is not too soupy, or it will weaken the pot's structure.
Don't forget to add perlite to the mixture. Perlite helps to increase the pot's drainage and makes it lighter.
You can use different molds to shape your pot. For example, you can use a beach ball to create a round pot or a bucket to make a cylindrical one.
Use gloves to avoid getting cement mix on your hands, as it can be hard to wash off.
By following these steps, you can create unique pots that complement your plants' beauty and add a charming touch to your garden or indoor space. Happy gardening!
