How to Grow Chinese Money Plant in Water
The Chinese money plant, also known as Pilea peperomioides, has become a popular houseplant due to its round, flat leaves and easy-to-grow nature. While many people grow Chinese money plants in soil, it is also possible to grow them in water, making them a great addition to any hydroponic setup or for those who prefer soil-free growing. Here are the steps to successfully grow Chinese money plants in water:
Step 1: Choose the right container
When growing Chinese money plants in water, it is important to choose the right container. Look for a clear glass vase or jar that is tall and narrow with a narrow opening. This will help support the plant's stem as it grows and prevent algae growth in the water.
Step 2: Fill the container with water
Fill the container with water that is room temperature or slightly warmer. Be sure to use filtered or distilled water, as tap water can contain chemicals and minerals that can harm the plant. Fill the container about two-thirds of the way full with water.
Step 3: Plant the Pilea peperomioides
Take a healthy stem cutting from an established Chinese money plant. The stem should be at least two inches long with a few leaves attached. Remove the lower leaves from the stem and place the cutting in the water, making sure the stem is submerged but the leaves are above water. You can also root multiple cuttings in the same container, as long as they are spaced apart to prevent overcrowding.
Step 4: Place the container in a bright location
Chinese money plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Place the container in a bright location, but away from direct sunlight, as this can cause the water to become too warm and stunt the plant's growth. You can use artificial lights or place the container near a window that receives partial sunlight.
Step 5: Change the water regularly
It is important to change the water in the container every week or so, as stagnant water can promote bacterial growth and harm the plant. When you change the water, be sure to gently rinse the roots of the plant to remove any debris or algae that may have formed. Fresh water will provide the plant with the nutrients it needs to grow, and prevent the water from becoming murky or foul-smelling.
Step 6: Maintain humidity
Chinese money plants thrive in humid environments. You can maintain the humidity level by misting the leaves with water every few days or by placing a small dish of water near the plant. You can also cover the container with a clear plastic bag to create a mini greenhouse effect, which will help to keep the humidity level high.
Step 7: Enjoy your beautiful new plant
With proper care and attention, your Chinese money plant will continue to grow and thrive in the water. You can keep it as a water plant, or transplant it into soil once it has developed a strong root system. Either way, the beautiful round leaves and unique growing style of the Chinese money plant will be sure to add character and charm to any home or office space.
