Do you plant a peat pot?

Peat pots are a great alternative to conventional plastic pots when starting your own seedlings. These pots are made from compressed peat moss which is a sustainable, biodegradable material. While peat pots are easy to use, there are a few things to keep in mind when planting them.

Start with the right soil mixture

When planting in a peat pot, it's important to use a soil mixture that's specifically formulated for seed starting. You can purchase these mixes at your local nursery or garden center. These mixes are designed to be light and airy which is important for proper root development. Avoid using heavy soils which can lead to poor drainage and root rot.

Pre-soak your peat pots

Plant your seedlings

Transplant your seedlings

When doing so, gently remove the peat pot wrapper and plant the entire root ball in the soil. Peat pots are designed to break down over time, so there's no need to remove them prior to planting.

Choose the right location. Seedlings need plenty of light and warmth, so choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Avoid over-fertilization. Seedlings don't need much fertilizer until they've developed their first true leaves. Once that happens, you can begin fertilizing them with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks.

Protect your seedlings from pests. Young seedlings are vulnerable to a wide range of pests including aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Keep a close eye on your plants and take action as soon as you notice any signs of infestation.
