How to Water a Chinese Money Plant

The Chinese money plant, also known as Pilea peperomioides, is a popular houseplant with its iconic look of round green leaves on long stems. Proper watering is important for the health of your Chinese money plant. Here are some tips on how to water your Chinese money plant:

1. Water Sparingly

Chinese money plants do not like to be overwatered. Overwatering can lead to root rot and kill the plant. You should wait until the top inch of soil is dry before watering the plant. You can test the soil by sticking your finger into the soil up to your knuckle. If the soil feels dry, then it is time to water the plant.

2. Use Room Temperature Water

Chinese money plants prefer room temperature water. If the water is too cold or too hot, it can shock the plant and damage the roots. You can let the water sit out for a few hours to allow it to reach room temperature before watering the plant. Alternatively, you can use a watering can with a long spout to water the plant directly at the soil to avoid getting water on the leaves.

3. Water from Below

Another way to water a Chinese money plant is to water from below. Fill a saucer with water and set the pot in the water. Allow the soil to soak up the water from the bottom for about 10 to 15 minutes. Once the soil has soaked up enough water, remove the pot from the water and let it drain completely.

4. Don't Let Water Sit in the Saucer

After watering from below, it is important to remove any excess water in the saucer. Don't let the plant sit in standing water as this can cause root rot. You can also use a pebble tray to elevate the pot above the water level to prevent the roots from sitting in standing water.

5. Adjust Watering During Different Seasons

The frequency of watering a Chinese money plant may need to be adjusted during different seasons. During the winter, when the plant is dormant, you may need to water it less frequently. In the summer, when the plant is actively growing, you may need to water it more frequently.
