How to Sew a Plant Pot Cover
Do you have a plain boring pot that needs sprucing up? Why not make a pot cover that adds some beauty and functionality to your indoor or outdoor plants? This simple guide will take you through the steps of sewing your own unique plant pot cover.
What You Will Need
Before we begin, gather up the following items:
Fabric of your choice
Measuring tape
Scissors
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Pins
Elastic band
Instructions
Step 1: Measure Your Pot
Measure the pot you want to cover, and add 1 inch to both the height and width measurements. This will give you the dimensions for the fabric you need to cut.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Using the measurements you obtained in step 1, cut your fabric to the correct size. Make sure to leave enough extra fabric at the top to create a fold-over edge for the elastic band.
Step 3: Sew the Edges
With the right side of the fabric facing inwards, sew together the two shorter sides of the fabric using a quarter inch seam allowance. Then, fold over the top of the fabric about half an inch to create the fold-over edge. Sew around this edge, again using a quarter inch seam allowance.
Step 4: Add the Elastic Band
Measure the circumference of your pot again, and cut a piece of elastic about 1 inch shorter than this measurement. Fold the elastic in half, then pin each end to the fold-over edge of the pot cover, making sure to evenly space the pins around the edge. Stretch the elastic as you sew it onto the fabric using a zig-zag stitch.
Step 5: Turn It Right-Side Out
With the right-side still facing inwards, turn the pot cover right-side out, making sure to pull the elastic over the top of the pot. After doing so, tuck the rough edge of the fabric under and sew it to the elastic band with a few stitches, so that it doesn't unravel.
Conclusion
And that's all there is to it! You now have a beautiful, customized pot cover that can add some life to any room of your house or garden. Experiment with different fabrics and colors to create unique designs, or use the opportunity to recycle old clothes or linens. Happy sewing!
