How to Build a Planter Box to Catch Water
Planter boxes not only add a pleasing aesthetic to any outdoor space, but they can also serve a practical purpose by catching and utilizing rainwater for your plants. By following these steps, you can easily build a planter box to catch water.
Materials You Will Need
- Wooden boards (cedar is best for durability)
- Wood screws
- Drill
- Waterproof liner or plastic
- Gravel or stones
- Soil and plants
- Rain chain or hose connector (optional)
Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Boards
Determine the size of your planter box and gather the appropriate number of wooden boards. Cedar is a great choice for durability and resistance to rot. Cut your boards to the appropriate length, making sure they are all even.
Step 2: Construct the Box
Using your drill and wood screws, assemble the wooden boards into a rectangular shape to form the box. Be sure to pre-drill the holes to avoid splitting the wood. Once you have constructed the box, use a level to ensure it is even on all sides.
Step 3: Add the Waterproof Liner
To prevent water from leaking out of the box, add a waterproof liner or plastic to the inside of the box. Make sure to trim off any excess material so that it fits snugly against the sides of the box.
Step 4: Add Gravel or Stones
Before adding soil and plants, add a layer of gravel or stones to the bottom of the box. This will help with drainage and prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.
Step 5: Add Soil and Plants
Add your choice of soil to the box, making sure it is evenly distributed. Choose plants that are appropriate for the amount of sunlight and water they will receive in the location of the box. Be sure to water the plants regularly, especially during hot and dry weather.
Step 6: Connect to Rain Chain or Hose Connector (Optional)
To collect rainwater, connect a rain chain or hose connector to the bottom of the box. This will allow you to collect rainwater that can be used to water your plants. Be sure to regularly empty and clean the container to prevent mold and bacteria from forming.
Building a planter box to catch water is an easy and environmentally-friendly way to water your plants. Follow these steps to create a beautiful and functional addition to your outdoor space.
