How to Build a Large Tree Planter
Adding trees to your outdoor space can greatly enhance the beauty and ambiance of your surroundings. However, it can be difficult to find the right planter to accommodate a tree big enough to make an impact. That's why building your own large tree planter can be a fantastic solution. In this guide, we'll show you how to build a large tree planter step-by-step.
Step 1: Gather Materials and Tools
Before starting the project, you'll need to gather all the necessary materials and tools. You will need the following:
4 pieces of treated lumber (4 x 4 x 8 feet)
1 sheet of pressure-treated plywood (4 x 8 feet)
Deck screws
Saw (circular or handsaw)
Drill
Wood glue
T-square
Tape measure
Step 2: Cut the Lumber
Start by cutting the 4 x 4 lumber into the following lengths:
4 pieces of 16 inches long, which will be the planter’s legs.
4 pieces of 70 inches long, which will form the base of the planter box.
4 pieces of 50 inches long, which will make up the vertical supports for the planter box.
Step 3: Assemble the Planter Box Frame
Take two of the 70-inch long pieces of lumber and position them parallel to each other on the ground, with a distance of 18 inches between them. Take two of the 16-inch long pieces and attach them to the bottom of the 70-inch long pieces of lumber. Use the T-square to ensure right angles, and use the drill and deck screws to attach the pieces in place. Repeat this process to form a rectangular frame for the planter box.
Step 4: Add the Vertical Supports
Take the four 50-inch long pieces of lumber and attach them vertically to the inner corners of the planter box frame. Use the drill and deck screws to attach them securely to the frame. This will add stability and support for the planter box when it is filled with soil and a tree.
Step 5: Cut the Plywood Bottom
Use the T-square to measure and mark a piece of plywood measuring 70 x 18 inches. Cut the plywood along those markings with a saw. This will create a base for your planter box.
Step 6: Attach the Plywood Base to the Planter Frame
Place the plywood base inside the planter box frame and attach it to the frame with deck screws. Make sure you screw the deck screws through the plywood and into the frame. This will hold the base in place and prevent it from shifting when the planter is filled with soil and a tree.
Step 7: Apply Wood Glue and Finish
Finally, apply wood glue along the joints of the lumber to create a stronger bond. Allow the glue to dry completely. Sand any rough edges on the lumber and plywood, and apply a finish of your choice. A waterproof coating is a good idea if you plan to place the planter outdoors.
With these steps, you have now built your own large tree planter. This gives you the flexibility to plant a tree of your choice in a specially-built planter that suits your space perfectly. Enjoy your new addition to your outdoor space!
