How to Plant Onion Sprouts
Onion sprouts, also known as scallions, are a delicious and nutritious addition to any dish. Not only are they easy to grow, but they also take up very little space. Here's how to plant onion sprouts.
1. Choose your container
You can plant onion sprouts in almost anything, as long as it has drainage holes. Some good container options are 6-inch pots or even recycled plastic containers. Make sure the container is deep enough for the roots to grow.
2. Prepare the container
Fill the container with a well-draining potting mix, leaving space at the top for watering. You can also add some compost or other organic matter to the mix to provide nutrients.
3. Prepare the soil
Make a shallow trench or furrow in the soil, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Onion sprout seeds are very small, so don't worry about burying them too deep.
4. Sow the seeds
Sprinkle the onion sprout seeds in the trench, spacing them about 1/2 inch apart. Gently cover them with soil, and press down to ensure good soil-to-seed contact.
5. Water regularly
Water the container regularly, keeping the soil moist but not over-watered. Over-watering can cause the seeds to rot, so be careful not to do this.
6. Provide light
Onion sprouts need plenty of light to grow properly. Place your container in a sunny window or under grow lights.
7. Thin the sprouts
Once the onion sprouts start to grow, you may notice that they are too close together. Thin them out so that each sprout has plenty of space to grow. Simply snip the extra sprouts off at the soil level.
8. Harvest
Harvest your onion sprouts when they are about 4-6 inches tall. Simply snip them off at the soil level and add them to your dish.
With these simple steps, you can enjoy fresh, homegrown onion sprouts in no time. They are a tasty and healthy addition to any meal.
