How to Grow an Avocado Plant

Gathering Materials

Before planting an avocado pit, you will need to gather materials such as a ripe avocado, a glass jar or cup, toothpicks, soil, and a medium-sized flower pot. Make sure the soil is of good quality and that the pot has good drainage.

Removing the Pit

To remove the avocado pit, cut the avocado in half, then gently remove the pit with a spoon. Rinse the pit under cold water to remove any excess fruit.

Preparing the Pit

To prepare the pit, insert three toothpicks around the middle of the pit, spaced evenly apart. Fill the glass jar or cup with water so that the bottom of the pit is submerged in water, and the toothpicks rest on the edge of the jar or cup. This ensures that the bottom of the pit is exposed to water, allowing roots to grow. Place the jar or cup in a warm, sunny spot in your home.

Watching for Growth

Within a few weeks, you should see the pit splitting and the roots beginning to emerge. Once the roots are about two inches long, it鈥檚 time to plant the pit in soil.

Fill the flower pot with soil, moisten the soil, and make a hole in the center. Gently remove the toothpicks from the pit and place the pit in the hole with the pointed end of the pit facing up. Cover the pit with soil, leaving the top of the pit exposed.

Place the plant in a sunny spot and water it regularly, making sure the soil is moist but not too wet. Avocado plants prefer temperatures between 60-85掳F, so keep the plant in a warm location.
