How to Plant Garlic
Step 1: Choose the Right Time
Garlic should be planted in the fall, between September and November, depending on your location. It needs to go through a period of cold weather in order to form bulbs, so planting in the spring isn't recommended.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Garlic prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Work in a 2-4 inch layer of compost or aged manure before planting. Break up any clumps and remove rocks or debris.
Step 3: Get Your Garlic
Purchase your garlic from a reputable seed company or local nursery. Some varieties may perform better in your climate than others, so do a little research. Choose large, healthy bulbs with no signs of disease or damage.
Step 4: Prepare the Garlic
Separate the cloves from the bulb, being careful not to damage them. You can leave the papery skin on or remove it before planting. Some gardeners like to soak the cloves in a solution of baking soda and water before planting to help prevent fungal diseases.
Step 5: Plant the Garlic
Plant the cloves 2-3 inches deep, with the pointed end up. Space them 6-8 inches apart in rows that are 12-18 inches apart. Cover with soil and give them a good watering.
Step 6: Mulch
Once the garlic has been planted and watered, cover the soil with a layer of mulch. This will help to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the garlic from extreme temperatures.
Step 7: Care for the Garlic
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not water-logged. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in the spring and again in early summer. Cut back on watering and fertilizing as the garlic nears maturity.
Step 8: Harvest
Garlic is ready to harvest when the leaves start to turn brown and begin to fall over. Carefully loosen the soil around the bulbs and gently lift them out of the ground. Allow them to dry in a warm, dry spot for a week or two before cleaning and storing.
