Planting Mums in Your Garden
Are you wondering if you can plant mums in the ground? The good news is that planting mums in your garden is possible and relatively easy. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Choose the Right Spot
When selecting a spot in your garden to plant your mums, make sure it gets at least six hours of sunlight per day. Mums need plenty of sunlight to grow and thrive. Additionally, make sure the soil is well-draining and fertile. If you have heavy clay soils, consider amending them with organic matter such as compost or peat moss.
Prepare the Planting Hole
Before planting your mums, dig a hole in the soil that is twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole to help the roots penetrate the soil more easily. You can also add a slow-release fertilizer to the bottom of the hole to give your mums a head start.
Plant the Mums
Once you have prepared the planting hole, it is time to plant your mums. Remove the mum from its container and gently tease out the roots. Place the plant in the hole and backfill the soil, gently tamping it down to remove any air pockets. The crown of the plant should be level with the soil surface, not buried beneath it.
Water and Mulch the Mums
After planting your mums, water them thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots. Make sure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged as your mums establish themselves in their new home. To help retain moisture and keep the soil temperature consistent, add a layer of mulch around the mums.
Care for Your Mums
Once your mums are established, caring for them is relatively easy. Water them regularly, particularly during dry spells, but avoid overwatering them. Fertilize them twice a season with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and blooming. As the flowers start to fade, deadhead them to encourage new blooms. And, finally, prune your mums back in late spring to help promote new growth and a bushier plant.
So, now that you know you can plant mums in the ground, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get gardening! With a little bit of planning and care, you can enjoy the beauty of these flowers year after year.
