Pruning techniques
Early spring pruning
In early spring, peony will wake up from dormancy and gradually transition to the growth period. At this time, check the small buds on the branches, and only keep 2 ~ 3 tender buds at the top, and the rest can be removed. In addition, check whether there are sprouting tillers in the rhizome and dig them in time p>
Pruning after withering
After the flowering period of peony, all the petals and withered leaves should be removed, which can reduce the consumption of nutrients in the pot and is conducive to the division of flower buds. When the flower bud differentiation is obvious, only the buds on both sides of the branch are retained, and all the buds on the top are cut off p>
Pruning before winter
In winter, the plant just enters the dormancy period, and pruning is the best time. Cut off all overlapping branches, Cross branches and pest branches on the plant, and cut short the weak branches to promote their rejuvenation. For the branches that are too long, short cutting can reduce the consumption of nutrients p>
Pruning methods of different peony flowers
Pruning method of Dutch Peony
This is a common pruning method. Cut off the remaining flowers after the flowers wither from April to may, and dig out some of the new buds in early June. The branches were cut short in mid September p>
The main purpose of this cutting method is to establish the trunk. Through pruning, beautiful branches will continue to grow, covering a small area, but the disadvantage is that there are fewer flowers in a short time p>
Japanese shear method
It is said that this is the suggestion of the Japanese. Cut off the flower branches in time and cut them as short as possible. Keep the branches that have flower buds but do not bloom to promote plant regeneration p>
