How to Plant Cabbage Seeds in a Pot

Choosing the Right Pot

The first step is choosing the right pot. You want a pot that is at least 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Make sure the pot has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent water from accumulating in the soil. A plastic or clay pot will work well for this purpose. Just make sure it’s big enough to accommodate the roots of the cabbage plant.

Preparing the Soil

Cabbage plants prefer a fertile, loamy soil that is rich in organic matter. To prepare the soil, mix equal parts of compost and garden soil in a large container. Fertilize the plant every two weeks with a balanced plant food to ensure healthy growth. Cabbage plants need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, so make sure to place the pot in a sunny location.

Harvesting the Cabbage

Cabbage plants take about 80 to 180 days to mature, depending on the variety. When the cabbage head is fully formed and feels firm to the touch, it’s time to harvest. Cut the head off the stem and remove any damaged leaves. Rinse the cabbage head under running water and enjoy delicious, home-grown cabbage!
