How to Plant Avocado Pit in Water

If you’re an avocado lover and have been wondering how to grow your own avocado tree, you’re in luck! One of the easiest ways to start growing your own avocado is by planting the pit in water. With a little patience and care, you’ll soon have your own beautiful avocado plant.

Step 1: Select a Ripe Avocado

The first step in planting an avocado pit in water is to select a ripe avocado. Look for an avocado that is dark green in color and has a slightly bumpy skin. Avoid avocados that are too soft or too hard, as they may not be ripe enough or may be overripe.

Step 2: Remove the Pit

To remove the pit, cut the avocado in half, lengthwise. Then, gently twist the two halves in opposite directions to separate them. Use a spoon to scoop out the pit, making sure to remove any excess fruit from around the pit.

Step 3: Clean the Pit

After removing the pit, rinse it gently under cool running water to remove any remaining fruit. Be careful not to remove the brown outer skin of the pit, as this can damage the seed inside.

Step 4: Insert Three Toothpicks

To prepare the pit for planting, insert three toothpicks around the middle of the pit, making sure that they are evenly spaced. The toothpicks will help keep the pit suspended in the water.

Step 5: Fill a Glass or Jar with Water

Fill a glass or jar with room temperature water, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Place the avocado pit, with the toothpicks inserted, on top of the glass or jar, making sure that the bottom of the pit is just touching the water.

Step 6: Change the Water Every Few Days

Change the water in the glass or jar every few days, making sure to add fresh, room temperature water. Over time, the pit will begin to sprout roots and a stem. It can take up to 8 weeks for the roots to grow, so be patient.

Step 7: Plant the Avocado in Soil

Once the avocado pit has grown roots that are at least 2 inches long, it’s time to plant it in soil. Choose a pot that is at least 10 inches in diameter, and fill it with a good quality potting soil. Make a small hole in the soil and gently place the pit in the hole, making sure that the roots are covered with soil.

Step 8: Water the Plant Regularly

After planting the avocado pit in soil, water the plant regularly. Avocado trees need plenty of water, so make sure to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. You may need to water the plant every few days, depending on the temperature and humidity in your area.

Step 9: Provide Plenty of Sunlight

Avocado trees need plenty of sunlight in order to grow properly. Make sure to place your plant in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. You may need to move the plant around your home to find the perfect spot for it.
