How to Plant Apple Trees from Cuttings

Apple trees are a must-have for any home orchard. While it’s relatively easy to purchase apple trees from nurseries or garden centers, starting your own apple trees from cuttings can be a satisfying and cost-effective way to obtain the varieties you want. Follow these steps to successfully plant apple trees from cuttings:

Step One: Select the Right Cuttings

The first step to planting apple trees from cuttings is to get healthy branches from an existing tree during the dormant season. Choose branches that are around 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter and that have healthy buds. Make sure the branches come from the current year’s growth and are free of any disease or insect damage.
