How to Plant an Autumn Cherry Tree
Autumn cherry trees offer a burst of color to your garden, and are easy to grow with proper care. If you're looking to plant one of these lovely trees, here is a step-by-step guide on how to do so:
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
The first step is to choose the right location for your autumn cherry tree. These trees prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid areas with a lot of wind or areas prone to waterlogging. It's also important to make sure there is enough space for the tree to grow to its mature size, which can be up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
The next step is to prepare the soil for planting. Autumn cherry trees prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.5. You can use a soil testing kit to determine the pH level of your soil. If your soil is too alkaline, you can add acidifying agents, such as sulfur or iron sulfate, to bring the pH level down to the appropriate range. Mix in compost and other organic matter to improve the soil's structure and fertility.
Step 3: Dig the Hole
When digging the planting hole, make sure it is two to three times wider than the root ball, but not deeper than the root ball. The root collar, the area where the roots meet the trunk, should be level with the soil surface. This helps prevent water from pooling around the tree's base, which can cause rot and disease.
Step 4: Plant the Tree
Place the autumn cherry tree in the hole and make sure it is straight. Backfill the hole with the soil you removed, and gently tamp it down around the tree's roots. Water the tree thoroughly to settle the soil and help make sure the roots are properly hydrated. Add a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and prevent weeds.
Step 5: Care for the Tree
After planting, it's important to care for the tree properly to help it thrive. Water the tree deeply once a week, and more often during dry spells. A soaker hose can help ensure the water reaches the tree's roots. Fertilize the tree with a balanced fertilizer in early spring, and again in midsummer. Prune the tree lightly in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches, and to maintain its shape.
With proper care, your autumn cherry tree will bring you years of enjoyment with its beautiful blooms and stunning fall color. Follow these steps for a successful planting and healthy growth.
