How to Plant an Apricot Tree From a Seed

Apricots are a delicious and healthy fruit that can be enjoyed right off the tree. Planting an apricot tree from a seed is easy and cost-effective, but it requires patience and care. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Collecting the Seed

The first step is to collect the seed or pit from a ripe apricot fruit. Choose a high-quality fruit with no signs of disease or damage. Once the fruit is ripe, carefully cut it open and remove the pit. Wash the seed in warm water and let it dry for a few days.

Step 2: Preparing the Soil

Apricot trees require well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Dig a hole in the ground that is deep enough to accommodate the seed and its taproot. Mix some compost or aged manure into the soil to improve its fertility and drainage.

Step 3: Planting the Seed

Plant the apricot seed with the pointed end facing down and the flat end facing up. Cover the seed with about an inch of soil and pack it down gently to remove any air pockets. Water the soil thoroughly but be careful not to soak it.

In the first year, prune the tree to create a strong central leader and remove any branches that are crossing or growing in the wrong direction. In subsequent years, prune the tree in late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased wood and keep its size under control.
