How to Plant an Apple Tree in a Tub
If you have a small outdoor space or limited access to a garden, you can still enjoy growing your own apples by planting an apple tree in a tub. Follow these steps to successfully plant and maintain your apple tree in a container.
1. Choose the Right Container
The container should be large enough to accommodate the growth of an apple tree, at least 15-20 gallons in size. The container should also have drainage holes to prevent overwatering and promote healthy root development. Plastic or ceramic containers work well and are easy to move when needed.
2. Select the Right Apple Tree Variety
Not all varieties of apples are suitable for container planting. Dwarf apple trees are a good choice for container planting as they grow to a maximum height of around 6-8 feet. Some examples include 'Braeburn', 'Cox's Orange Pippin', 'Golden Delicious', and 'Red Delicious'. Make sure to choose a variety that is appropriate for your climate and growing conditions.
3. Fill the Container with Potting Mix
Fill the bottom of the container with a few inches of gravel or stone for drainage, then fill the container with a good quality potting mix. Organic potting mix works well and provides good drainage and nutrients. Make sure to leave enough space at the top of the container to accommodate watering.
4. Add Your Apple Tree
Carefully remove the apple tree from its nursery container and loosen the roots. Place the tree in the center of the container and fill the container with potting mix, making sure to cover the roots completely. Firm down the soil gently around the tree, and water thoroughly.
5. Provide Adequate Water and Sunlight
Apple trees require adequate watering, especially in the first year of growth. Water the tree regularly but make sure not to overwater it as this can promote root rot. Apple trees need full sunlight and should be placed in a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, preferably more.
6. Fertilize Regularly
Apple trees require regular fertilization to promote healthy growth and fruit production. A balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium should be applied every spring and summer. Check the label for specific instructions on how much to use based on the size of your container and tree.
7. Prune Your Apple Tree
Pruning is important for the health of the apple tree and to promote proper growth and fruit production. In the dormant season, remove any dead or diseased branches or ones that are growing in the wrong direction. During the growing season, remove any water sprouts (vertical shoots) that appear.
Planting an apple tree in a tub is a wonderful way to grow your own fresh fruit, even in a small space. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy the sweet reward of fresh apples for years to come.
