How to Plant a Tree Wrapped in Burlap
Planting a tree is a rewarding experience that benefits both the environment and our own lives. If you have recently purchased a tree that is wrapped in burlap, congratulations! This article will serve as a guide to assist you in planting your new tree.
1. Preparing the Site
First, select a location in your yard that has good drainage and receives plenty of sunlight. Clear the area of any debris or weeds and dig a hole that is two times wider than the diameter of the burlap root ball. Dig the hole to the same depth as the root ball or slightly shallower. Loosen the soil on the sides and bottom of the hole to encourage root growth.
2. Removing Burlap and Twine
After the hole is prepared, remove the burlap and twine from the top of the root ball. Cut away any burlap and twine that is visible above the soil line. However, if the burlap and twine is completely covered by soil, it is not necessary to remove.
3. Placing the Tree in the Hole
Next, carefully place the tree into the hole. Make sure the tree is level and straight. If the tree is not straight, adjust the position accordingly. Be careful not to drop the tree or damage any roots in the process.
4. Backfilling the Hole
Once the tree is in place, backfill the hole with soil. Do not add amendments or fertilizer to the soil mix. Tamp the soil firmly to remove any air pockets. After the hole is completely filled, create a watering ring around the perimeter of the hole. This will help direct water to the root area.
5. Watering and Mulching
After planting, water the tree thoroughly to help settle the soil. Provide enough water to saturate the root ball and surrounding soil. Spread a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded leaves, over the soil surface to help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. Mulch should be spread to a depth of 2-4 inches.
6. Caring for Your Newly Planted Tree
For the first year after planting, it is important to water your new tree deeply once a week during dry spells. Avoid using fertilizer during the first growing season. Prune any broken or damaged branches as necessary. Protect the trunk from lawn mowers and trimmers by placing a small barrier of mulch or rocks around the base of the tree.
By follow these steps and performing proper care, your newly planted tree will grow and thrive in your yard for years to come!
