How to Plant a Tree with a Burlap Root Ball

Planting trees is an essential part of maintaining a healthy ecosystem, and a great way to beautify your property. When planting a tree with a burlap root ball, there are several things to consider to ensure that the young tree has the best chance of survival.

Choosing the Right Spot

The first step in planting a tree is to select the right location. Make sure the area has good drainage and plenty of sunlight. Pay attention to any buildings, utility lines or other objects underground that may impact the growth of the tree, and ensure that there is enough space for the tree's roots to expand.

Preparation

Before planting, it is important to prepare the soil. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball, but not too deep. Remove any debris or grass from the area, and loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole using a shovel or tiller. Make sure the root ball is well-watered before planting.

Planting the Tree

To plant the tree, carefully remove the burlap wrapper from the root ball. If the root ball is too large, you may need to cut the burlap off with a pair of scissors. Use your hands to gently loosen any roots that have grown in a circular pattern around the root ball, and position the tree in the center of the hole. The tree should be at the same level as it was in the container, or slightly higher to account for settling.

Backfilling

Begin backfilling the hole with the soil you removed earlier, making sure to pack the soil around the roots as you go. Add water at various intervals to help settle the soil and remove pockets of air. Do not add fertilizer or any other additives, as the tree needs time to establish itself without added nutrients.

Staking

If the tree is in a windy area or has a weak trunk, you may need to stake it to keep it stable. To do this, place stakes in the ground approximately six inches from the trunk of the tree, and secure it with a flexible tie. Keep the stakes in place for at least one year to help the tree establish itself in its new environment.

Maintaining the Tree

To ensure that the tree continues to thrive, it is important to provide it with proper care. Water it thoroughly once a week during the growing season and twice a month during the dormant season. Check the tree regularly for any signs of pests or disease, and prune any damaged or diseased branches as necessary. As the tree grows, it may need additional support or pruning to maintain its health and shape.
