How to Plant a Purple Leaf Smoke Tree
A purple leaf smoke tree is a beautiful addition to any garden or landscape. With its unique color and delicate blooms, it not only adds beauty but also attracts birds and butterflies. If you are interested in planting one, follow these easy steps:
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
The first step in planting a purple leaf smoke tree is choosing the right location. The tree prefers full sun and well-draining soil. It should not be planted in low-lying areas where water tends to pool. Additionally, keep in mind that this tree can grow up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide, so plan accordingly.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Before planting, it is important to prepare the soil. The soil should be rich in organic matter and have a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. If the soil is too acidic, add lime to raise the pH level. If it is too alkaline, add sulfur to lower it. It is also a good idea to add compost or other organic matter to the soil to improve drainage and add nutrients.
Step 3: Plant the Tree
When planting the tree, dig a hole that is two to three times wider than the root ball. The hole should be deep enough so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Place the tree in the hole and backfill with soil, being sure to tamp it down firmly to eliminate air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly to help settle the soil.
Step 4: Mulch and Water
After planting, mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch away from the trunk of the tree to prevent rot. Water the tree regularly, especially during the first year after planting to establish a deep root system. Once established, the tree is relatively drought-tolerant and only needs to be watered during periods of extended drought.
Step 5: Pruning
Pruning is not necessary for the purple leaf smoke tree, but it can help shape the tree and keep it looking its best. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Remove any dead or diseased branches and shape the tree as desired. Be sure to use sharp, sterilized pruning tools to avoid damaging the tree.
With a little bit of preparation and care, you can enjoy the beauty of a purple leaf smoke tree in your garden for years to come.
