How to plant a plumeria tree from cuttings
Plumeria is a beautiful and fragrant tree that produces stunning flowers in a variety of colors. One of the most popular ways to propagate plumeria is by taking cuttings from an established tree and planting them. Here's how you can plant a plumeria tree from cuttings:
Choose the right time
The best time to take plumeria cuttings is during the spring and summer months when the tree is actively growing. The ideal time to take cuttings is in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day sets in. The tree should be well-watered prior to taking cuttings to ensure it is adequately hydrated.
Collect the cuttings
Using clean, sharp pruning shears or a knife, select a stem that is at least 12 inches long and has 3-4 nodes (the small raised bumps on the stem where the leaves grow from). Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle just below a node. Remove any leaves or flowers from the lower half of the stem, leaving only a few leaves at the top of the cutting.
Prepare the cuttings
Dip the cut end of the stem in rooting hormone powder to encourage root growth. Shake off any excess powder and insert the cut end of the stem into a well-draining soil mix. You can use a pot with drainage holes or plant the cutting directly into the ground.
Care for the cuttings
Place the potted cutting in a warm, humid location with indirect sunlight. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. In about 4-6 weeks, roots should begin to form. Once the roots have established, you can gradually introduce the new plant to more sunlight and less humidity.
Transplant the plumeria tree
When the plumeria tree has outgrown its pot or the root system has become too crowded, it's time to transplant it. Choose a permanent location with well-draining soil and full sun exposure. Dig a hole big enough to accommodate the root system and gently place the tree in the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and water the tree thoroughly.
With proper care, your plumeria cutting will grow into a beautiful and healthy tree, providing you with stunning flowers and a sweet fragrance for years to come.
