How to Plant a Japanese Weeping Cherry Tree
If you are looking to add a stunning, graceful tree to your yard or garden, a Japanese weeping cherry tree is an excellent choice. This ornamental tree, also known as a “Shidare Zakura” in Japan, has a unique, cascading branch structure and produces beautiful pink or white blossoms in the spring. Ready to plant your own Japanese weeping cherry tree? Follow these steps for success:
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
When selecting a location for your Japanese weeping cherry tree, keep in mind that it needs full sun – at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. The tree also should be planted in soil that is well-draining and slightly acidic, with a pH of about 6 to 6.5. The tree prefers to grow in slightly elevated areas that do not retain water.
Step 2: Decide on Size and Variety
Japanese weeping cherry trees come in a wide variety of sizes and colors. Some trees grow tall and narrow, while others have a shorter, more spreading habit. Choose a size and shape that will work well in your landscape. You also can select between pink and white blossoms, depending on what you prefer.
Step 3: Dig the Planting Hole
Dig a hole that is twice as wide and about as deep as the container your tree came in. Gently remove the tree from its container, being careful not to disturb the roots too much. If the tree is wrapped in burlap, be sure to remove the burlap before planting. Place the tree in the hole and backfill with soil, tamping it down gently.
Step 4: Water and Mulch
After planting your Japanese weeping cherry tree, give it a deep watering to help settle the soil around the roots. Then, spread several inches of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help conserve moisture and prevent weed growth. A layer of mulch also will help regulate soil temperature, which can be especially beneficial during hot summers or cold winters.
Step 5: Provide Care and Maintenance
To keep your Japanese weeping cherry tree healthy and thriving, provide regular care and maintenance. Water the tree deeply about once a week, or more often during periods of drought. Prune the tree in late summer to remove any damaged or diseased limbs, as well as any suckers that may have sprouted from the base of the tree.
You also can apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to help promote healthy growth and abundant blooms. Simply sprinkle the fertilizer around the base of the tree, following the label instructions carefully.
With proper care and maintenance, your Japanese weeping cherry tree will be a stunning addition to your landscape for many years to come!
