How to Plant a Hydrangea from a Pot
Hydrangeas are the perfect addition to any garden. With their large blossoms and vibrant colors, they are sure to make a statement. If you have purchased a hydrangea in a pot, you may be wondering how to plant it in your garden. Here are the steps to follow:
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
The first step to planting a hydrangea is to choose the right location. Hydrangeas thrive in partial shade, so choose a spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. The soil should also be well-draining and rich in organic matter. Hydrangeas prefer soil with a pH between 5.2 and 6.0.
Step 2: Dig the Hole
Once you have chosen the right location, it's time to dig the hole. The hole should be twice as wide as the pot and just as deep. Make sure the soil at the bottom of the hole is loose.
Step 3: Remove the Hydrangea from the Pot
Carefully remove the hydrangea from the pot, gently loosening any roots that are stuck to the sides. If the roots are tightly wound, it's okay to make a few vertical cuts to help them spread out.
Step 4: Place the Hydrangea in the Hole
Place the hydrangea in the hole and backfill with soil, tamping it down gently with your hands. Make sure the plant is level with the ground, and the crown of the plant (where the stem meets the soil) is just above ground level.
Step 5: Water and Mulch
Water the hydrangea thoroughly, making sure the soil is completely moist. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant, keeping it at least 2 inches away from the stem. This will help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Step 6: Care and Maintenance
Hydrangeas require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again in early summer. Prune back dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring, being careful not to remove any branches that produce blooms.
With these easy steps, you can plant a hydrangea from a pot and enjoy its beautiful blooms for years to come.
