How to Plant a Cobnut Tree
Cobnut trees are a type of hazelnut tree that produces delicious nuts. They can be grown in gardens or small orchards and are relatively easy to care for. If you want to plant a cobnut tree in your garden, here are the steps you need to follow:
Choosing a Site
The first step in planting a cobnut tree is to choose a suitable site. Cobnut trees need plenty of sunshine and well-draining soil. Choose a location that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day and has soil that is not too damp.
Cobnut trees can grow up to 8 meters tall and can have a spread of up to 6 meters, so make sure you choose a spot with enough room for the tree to grow. Avoid planting near areas where water tends to gather, as this can lead to root rot.
Preparing the Soil
Once you have chosen a site, the next step is to prepare the soil. Clear the area of any weeds or grass, and dig a hole that is twice the diameter of the root ball and just as deep. Cobnut trees prefer soil that is slightly acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.5) and well-drained.
If your soil is too alkaline, you can add sulfur to lower the pH. If the soil is too heavy, you can amend it with sand or perlite to improve drainage. Mix these amendments with the soil before planting.
Planting the Tree
After you have prepared the soil, it's time to plant the tree. Gently remove the tree from its container, taking care not to damage the roots. Place the tree in the center of the hole and backfill with soil, making sure the tree is at the same depth as it was in the container.
Make a small mound of soil around the base of the tree to help retain water. Water the tree thoroughly and mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Caring for the Tree
Cobnut trees require regular watering, especially during the first few years of growth. Water deeply once a week, or more often during hot, dry weather. Avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can encourage fungal growth.
Pruning is also important to ensure a healthy and productive tree. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any damaged, diseased, or crossing branches. This will also help to promote growth and fruit production.
Fertilizing is not usually necessary for cobnut trees, as they can obtain the nutrients they need from the soil. However, if your soil is particularly poor, you can use a balanced fertilizer in the spring to give the tree a boost.
Harvesting
Cobnut trees usually begin to produce nuts in their third or fourth year. The nuts ripen in late summer or early autumn and can be harvested when they begin to fall from the tree. Shake the tree gently to encourage any remaining nuts to fall.
Remove the husks from the nuts and allow them to dry in a well-ventilated area for several weeks. Once dry, the nuts can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to a year.
By following these steps, you can successfully plant and care for a cobnut tree in your garden. With a little patience and care, you'll be enjoying delicious, home-grown nuts in no time!
