How to Plant a Bay Tree in a Container

Bay trees, also known as sweet bay or bay laurel, are a popular plant for both culinary and ornamental purposes. It is highly adaptable and can be grown in containers, making it ideal for those who do not have a lot of outdoor space. Here are the steps on how to plant a bay tree in a container:

Step 1: Choosing the Container

When selecting a container, choose one that is large enough for the plant’s roots to spread out comfortably. A good rule of thumb is to use a container that is at least twice the size of the plant’s root ball. It should also have adequate drainage holes to prevent water from building up and rotting the roots.

Step 2: Preparing the Soil

Bay trees prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. To prepare the soil, mix a high-quality potting soil with perlite or pumice to improve drainage. Alternatively, you can mix garden soil with sand, perlite or vermiculite. Adding a slow-release fertilizer can also help the plant thrive.

Step 3: Planting the Bay Tree

Carefully remove the bay tree from its previous container and gently tease the roots apart. Place it in the center of the new container, positioning the top of the root ball about an inch below the rim of the container. Then, fill in the remaining space with the prepared soil. Make sure to gently tamp down the soil around the roots to remove any air pockets.

Step 4: Watering and Fertilizing

After planting the bay tree, water it thoroughly to allow the soil to settle around the roots. From then on, water the plant deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. During the growing season, feed the plant with a liquid fertilizer every two to three weeks. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can damage the plant.

Step 5: Providing Adequate Light and Temperature

Bay trees thrive in full sun to partial shade. Place the container in an area that receives at least six hours of sunlight per day. The ideal temperature range for bay trees is between 60-80°F. Protect the plant from extreme heat or cold by moving it indoors during extreme temperatures.

Step 6: Pruning and Harvesting

Prune the bay tree regularly to maintain its shape and size. You can also harvest the leaves for culinary purposes, but try not to remove more than a third of the plant at a time. The best time to harvest bay leaves is in the morning when the essential oils are most concentrated.
