How to Plant a Ball and Burlapped Tree
The process of planting a ball and burlapped tree is slightly different from planting a bare-root tree. Here are the steps to follow:
Choose the right location
Before planting a ball and burlapped tree, you need to choose the right location. The tree should be planted in an area with well-drained soil and enough space for the roots to grow. The location should also receive enough sunlight to support the growth of the tree. Avoid planting the tree too close to structures or other trees as the roots may interfere with the foundation or other tree roots.
Prepare the planting hole
The planting hole should be wide and deep enough to accommodate the root ball. The width of the hole should be two to three times the width of the root ball. The depth should be slightly shallower than the height of the root ball. Remove any weeds, rocks or debris from the hole. Also, loosen up the bottom of the hole to encourage better drainage.
Plant the tree
With the help of at least two people, carefully lower the tree into the hole. The top of the root ball should be level with the surrounding soil. Fill the hole with soil and pack it firmly around the tree to eliminate any air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly to help settle the soil and eliminate any air pockets.
Mulch the tree
A layer of mulch around the base of the tree is important to help retain moisture and maintain a consistent soil temperature. The mulch should be two to three inches deep and spread out to the edge of the planting hole. Avoid placing the mulch up against the trunk of the tree as this can promote rot or pest infestation.
Prune the tree
If there are any damaged or broken branches, prune them off to promote healthy growth. This can also be a good time to shape the tree to your desired form. Be sure to use clean, sharp tools to minimize damage to the tree.
Care for the tree
After planting the tree, it is important to water it regularly, especially during periods of drought. In the first year, the tree may need to be watered weekly, depending on weather conditions. Fertilizer should be applied sparingly and only after the tree has established a strong root system. Also, keep an eye out for any signs of pest or disease and take immediate action if needed.
By following these steps, you can successfully plant a ball and burlapped tree and enjoy its beauty and benefits for years to come.
