How to move a plant into another pot

Moving a plant into another pot may seem like a simple task, but it’s important to do it correctly to avoid damaging the roots and ensure the plant’s continued health. Whether you’re repotting to give the plant more space or transferring it to a new container, here’s a step-by-step guide to make the process as smooth as possible.

Choose the right pot

Before you move your plant, you need to find the right pot. Choose a pot that’s slightly larger than the current one, but not too large that the plant will feel lost. Make sure the new pot has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent overwatering.

Prepare the plant

Before removing your plant from its old pot, you need to prepare it by watering it a day or two in advance. This will help the soil come away from the pot walls more easily, reducing the risk of root damage when you remove the plant.

Remove the plant from its current pot

Gently turn the old pot on its side and, using your other hand, hold the soil around the plant to keep it intact. Carefully ease the plant out of the pot, supporting the base of the stem near the soil line with your other hand. If the plant is stuck, you can push from the bottom or run a knife around the inside of the pot to loosen it.

Prepare the new pot

Add fresh soil to the pot until it’s about a third full. Make a hole in the center of the soil for the plant to sit in.

Move the plant into the new pot

Place the plant in the new pot, gently adjusting its position until it’s straight and centered. Fill the space around the sides of the plant with soil, making sure not to pack it down too tightly. Fill the pot until the soil level is about an inch below the rim.

Water the plant

After repotting, give the plant a good drink of water to help it settle into its new home. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet, for the following week or so to help the plant adjust.

Finally, tidy up any mess and clean your tools to keep them in good condition for future use.
