How to Propagate Jade Plant in Water
If you have a jade plant and want to propagate it, water propagation is a simple method to create new plants from stem cuttings. Here’s a step-by-step guide to propagate jade plant in water:
What you’ll need:
Jade plant
Sharp knife or pruning shears
Glass jar or vase
Filtered or distilled water
Step 1: Choose a healthy stem cutting
Select a stem cutting from a healthy jade plant. The cutting should be 2-3 inches long and have at least two leaves. Make sure to use sterile pruning shears or a sharp knife to prevent infection.
Step 2: Remove the leaves
Carefully remove the bottom one or two leaves from the cutting, as it will be submerged in water. Make sure no leaves are below the waterline, as they will rot and harm the cutting.
Step 3: Place the cutting in a jar of water
Fill a glass jar or vase with filtered or distilled water, leaving an inch or two of space at the top. Place the stem cutting into the water, making sure it’s fully submerged but not touching the bottom of the jar.
Step 4: Find the perfect spot
Put the jar in a bright location but out of direct sunlight. Avoid placing it in drafty areas or near heating or cooling vents, as this may stress or kill the cutting. Maintain a consistent room temperature between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 5: Change the water regularly
Change the water in the jar every few days to prevent bacterial growth and maintain water quality. At the same time, inspect the cutting for any signs of rot or disease, such as a slimy appearance or blackened stem. If this occurs, throw away the cutting and start over with a new one.
Step 6: Look for root development
After a few weeks, the cutting should start to produce roots from the cut end. Once the roots are several inches long and well-developed, transplant the cutting into soil or a potting mix suitable for succulents.
Step 7: Transplant the new plant
Gently remove the cutting from the jar and plant it in a small pot filled with well-draining soil. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and place the pot in a bright, well-lit location. Water the new plant sparingly until it’s established, and avoid fertilization for the first few months.
With patience and care, propagating jade plant in water can be a rewarding experience. Remember to monitor the cutting regularly and provide the right conditions for it to thrive. Enjoy your new plants!
