How to Pot a Jade Plant

Jade plants, also known as Crassula ovata, are easy to care for succulent plants that make great houseplants. With their thick, shiny leaves and succulent stems, they can add a touch of green to any indoor space. Choose the Right Container

The first step is to choose the right container for your jade plant. It's important to pick a pot that's not too big or too small. The pot should be just slightly bigger than the root ball of the plant. A pot that's too large can hold too much water and cause root rot. A pot that's too small can cause the roots to become cramped, limiting the plant's growth.

When choosing a pot, also consider the material it's made of. Jade plants prefer pots made of terracotta or cement, as they help to absorb excess moisture. Plastic pots can keep the soil too moist, which can lead to root rot.

Prepare the Potting Soil

The next step is to prepare the potting soil for your jade plant. A well-draining, sandy soil mix is best for jade plants. You can make your own soil mix by combining equal parts of potting soil, sand, and perlite.
