How to Plant Velvet Ash Tree
Velvet ash (Fraxinus velutina) is a deciduous tree that is native to the Southwest United States and Mexico. It is known for its attractive foliage and the shade it provides. If you want to plant a velvet ash tree in your backyard, here is how to do it.
Step 1: Choose a Location
The first step in planting a velvet ash tree is to choose the right location in your yard. The tree needs a spot that receives full sun, which means it should get at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Additionally, the location should have well-draining soil, as velvet ash trees do not like to have their roots sitting in water.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
The soil in the planting area should have a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. If your soil is too acidic, you can add lime to it. Conversely, if the soil is too alkaline, you can add sulfur. It's a good idea to have the soil tested before planting the tree to determine if you need to make any amendments. In addition, the soil should be loosened up to a depth of at least 12 inches to promote good root growth.
Step 3: Dig the Hole
Once you have prepared the planting location, it's time to dig the hole for the tree. The hole should be approximately two to three times wider than the root ball of the tree. The depth should be equal to the height of the root ball. Be sure to remove any grass or weeds around the hole that could compete with the tree for nutrients and water.
Step 4: Plant the Tree
Before you plant the tree, remove it from its container and loosen the roots. If the tree has any circling roots, gently prune them off. Place the tree in the hole and make sure the root collar (where the root ball meets the trunk) is level with the soil surface. Fill in the hole with soil, packing it around the roots to remove any air pockets. Water the tree deeply.
Step 5: Mulch
Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the tree is a good idea. Mulch helps to retain moisture in the soil, reduces weed growth, and moderates soil temperatures. However, be careful not to place the mulch directly against the trunk of the tree, as this can cause problems with pests and disease. A layer of mulch two to three inches deep is ideal.
Step 6: Water
Water the tree deeply and regularly, especially during the first year after planting. The tree will need about one inch of water per week, either from rainfall or supplemental irrigation. Be sure to water deeply and less frequently, rather than frequently and shallowly. This will encourage the tree's roots to grow deep and strong.
Step 7: Prune
Pruning is not necessary for velvet ash trees, but it can help to shape the tree and remove any damaged or diseased branches. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring, before the tree starts to grow new leaves. Be sure to use clean, sharp pruning tools to avoid damaging the tree.
Planting a velvet ash tree requires some effort, but the result is a beautiful and functional addition to your yard. By following these steps, you can ensure that your tree gets off to a healthy start and becomes a source of enjoyment for years to come.
