How to Plant Key Lime Tree

Key lime trees are tropical and sub-tropical fruit trees known for producing small, juicy and acidic key limes that are widely used in cooking, baking, and cocktails. If you have a garden, patio or balcony, planting a key lime tree is a great way to enjoy fresh key limes straight off the tree. Here's how to plant your own key lime tree:

Plant Selection

Choose a healthy key lime tree plant from a reputable nursery or online store. Make sure the tree is disease-free and has a sturdy trunk that's at least 3/4-inch thick. The height of the tree should be around 2-3 feet tall. If you're buying a potted tree, inspect the roots to ensure they're not pot-bound or root-bound.

Location and Soil

Choose a sunny area in your garden or balcony that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. The soil should be well-draining and slightly acidic with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Avoid planting the tree in a low-lying area or where water tends to accumulate.

Planting

Dig a hole that's twice as wide and just as deep as the tree's root ball. Loosen and break up the soil at the bottom of the hole with a shovel. Place the tree into the hole, making sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground surface. Backfill the hole with the excavated soil, tamping down lightly to eliminate air pockets. Form a small basin around the tree and fill it with water to help settle the soil and hydrate the tree.

Care and Maintenance

Water the tree deeply once a week, especially during hot and dry weather. Keep the soil moist but not saturated. Fertilize the tree with a balanced fertilizer or a citrus fertilizer in early spring, late summer, and early fall. Prune the tree to shape it, remove dead or damaged branches, and encourage new growth. Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids or mealybugs, and treat with insecticide if necessary.

Harvesting

Key lime trees can take up to three years to produce fruit. Once the tree starts bearing fruit, pick the limes when they're fully ripe and yellow-green in color. Use a gentle twist or a pair of clippers to remove the limes from the stem. Store the limes at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Use the limes for making key lime pie, cocktails, marinades, or salad dressings.
