How to Plant Tomatoes in a Bag of Potting Soil

Tomatoes are one of the easiest and most rewarding vegetables you can grow at home. One of the best ways to grow them is in a bag of potting soil. Here are the steps to get you started.

Choose Your Bag of Potting Soil

The first step is to choose the right bag of potting soil. Look for a bag that is big enough to provide adequate space for the roots to grow. A 50-pound bag will usually work just fine. Make sure the soil is fresh and moist, but not too wet.

Prepare the Bag

Before you start planting, you need to prepare the bag. First, lay the bag flat on the ground with the side that will be facing up. Then, poke a few holes in the bottom of the bag to allow for drainage. Finally, use a pair of scissors to cut a large X in the center of the top of the bag.

Finally, when your tomatoes start to ripen, you can begin to harvest them. Gently remove each tomato by twisting it off the stem. Don't pull the tomatoes off the plant, as this can damage the stem and reduce future yield. Store your ripe tomatoes in a cool, dry place until you are ready to use them.
