How to Plant Figs Tree

If you love figs and have a spot in your garden or yard, why not plant a fig tree? They are relatively easy to grow and can produce delicious fruit for many years. Here’s how to plant a fig tree.

Choose a site

Figs need full sunlight to produce the best fruit, so choose a site that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Figs also need well-draining soil, so avoid planting in heavy clay or soil that is prone to waterlogging. Additionally, fig trees can grow quite large, so make sure you have enough space for the tree to grow and spread out.

Prepare the soil

Before planting your fig tree, prepare the soil by removing any weeds or rocks and adding organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure. Figs prefer a pH level of 6.0 to 6.5, so if your soil is too acidic or alkaline, adjust it before planting. Pruning: Figs can become large and unwieldy if not pruned regularly. Prune your tree in late winter or early spring by removing any dead or diseased wood and shaping the tree.

Winter care: Figs are hardy down to about 10°F (-12°C), but younger trees may need protection from freezing temperatures.
