How to Plant Evergreen Trees
Evergreen trees are valued for their year-round foliage and the beauty they bring to the landscape. If you are planning to plant evergreen trees in your yard, here’s a guide to help you get started:
Step 1: Choose the Right Tree
The first step in planting an evergreen tree is to choose the right one for your yard. Consider the size and shape of the tree, as well as its growth rate, and if its soil and light requirements match your yard’s growing conditions. Some popular evergreen tree options include pine, spruce, fir, and cedar trees.
Step 2: Pick the Right Spot
Choosing a suitable planting location is critical to the success of your tree. Most evergreen trees require full sun to thrive, so pick a spot with at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. Make sure the spot has well-draining soil to avoid waterlogged roots, which can lead to root rot.
Step 3: Prepare the Site
Before planting your evergreen tree, prepare the site by removing grass, weeds, rocks or other debris. Dig a hole that’s two to three times wider than the diameter of the tree’s rootball and the same depth as the rootball. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a fork or shovel and add compost, vermiculite or peat moss to improve soil fertility.
Step 4: Plant the Tree
Now it’s time to plant your evergreen tree. Carefully remove the tree from its container or burlap sack by cutting away the plastic or twine. Hold the tree straight in the planting hole and backfill around the roots with soil mixture, tamping down the soil lightly to ensure good contact with roots. Water the tree thoroughly after planting to help the soil settle around the roots.
Step 5: Mulch and Water
After planting, spread a layer of mulch around the base of the tree, but be sure to keep it away from the trunk. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and prevent weed growth. Water the tree regularly, especially during dry spells or hot weather, and avoid overwatering, which can damage the root system.
Step 6: Prune and Fertilize
Once your evergreen tree has established itself in the ground, prune it as needed to shape and improve its appearance. Remove any dead, diseased or damaged branches and trim back any crossing or rubbing branches. To encourage new growth, apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring or late fall.
With proper care and attention, your evergreen tree will grow strong and healthy, adding beauty and value to your outdoor space for years to come.
