How to Plant Spring Onion Seeds in Pots
Spring onions, also known as scallions, are a delicious and versatile addition to any garden. These hardy plants can be easily grown in pots, making them an ideal choice for those with limited garden space or who want to incorporate fresh, home-grown produce into their cooking. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to plant spring onion seeds in pots.
Step 1: Choose the Right Pot
When selecting a pot for spring onions, choose one that is at least 15cm deep and has adequate drainage holes. A plastic or terra cotta pot will work well. Always ensure your pot is clean before planting.
Step 2: Fill the Pot with Soil
Fill your pot with a good quality potting mix that is loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich. Leave 2-3cm space at the top of the pot to allow for watering.
Step 3: Sow the Seeds
Sow the spring onion seeds on the surface of the soil, ensuring they are spaced roughly 2cm apart. Lightly press the seeds into the soil, but do not cover them with soil.
Step 4: Water the Seeds
It is important to keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks after sowing the seeds. Water the seeds gently and thoroughly, making sure the soil is never allowed to dry out completely.
Step 5: Provide the Right Conditions
Spring onions prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure your pot is placed in a sunny spot in your garden or on your balcony. They also prefer cooler temperatures, ideally between 10-20°C. If the temperature is too high, the onions may bolt (flower prematurely).
Step 6: Thin the Seedlings
After the spring onions have germinated, thin out the seedlings to ensure they have enough space to grow. Keep the strongest seedlings and remove any weaker ones. Space each seedling roughly 5cm apart.
Step 7: Fertilize the Plants
Feed your spring onion plants with a balanced organic fertilizer once they have reached a height of 10cm. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks to keep the plants healthy and growing well.
Step 8: Harvest the Onions
Spring onions are ready to harvest once the stems have reached a thickness of roughly 1cm. Harvest the onions by pulling them out of the soil or by using a sharp knife to cut them at the base. You can harvest the onions when they are small and tender or wait until they mature to full size.
Now that you know how to plant spring onion seeds in pots, you can enjoy fresh, home-grown onions all season long. With a little care and attention, these versatile plants will thrive in your container garden.
