How to Plant Cherry Tomato Plants in Pots

Cherry tomato plants are a great choice for container gardening, especially if you have limited space or want to add some freshness to your balcony, patio or porch. Here are some tips to help you get started with planting cherry tomato plants in pots.

Choose a Pot

The first step is to choose a pot that is big enough for your cherry tomato plant to grow. A 10 or 12 inch pot is a good size for one plant. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent excess water from accumulating in the soil. You can also opt for a self-watering pot to make watering easier.

Select Good Soil

Choose a potting mix that is specifically designed for container gardening, as it will provide adequate drainage and nutrients. You can also make your own mix by combining equal parts of compost, peat moss, and perlite or vermiculite. Fill the pot about 3/4 full with the soil mix.

Fertilize the plants with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every two to three weeks, following the instructions on the package. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth and fewer fruits.

Harvest the Tomatoes

Cherry tomato plants usually start producing fruits in about 60 days after planting. You can harvest the fruits when they are bright red, plump, and slightly soft to the touch. Use scissors or pruners to cut the fruits from the stem, leaving a bit of stem attached to the fruit. Enjoy them fresh, in salads, or in a delicious tomato sauce.
