How to Root a Schefflera Plant in Water

Schefflera plants, also known as umbrella plants, are hardy and low-maintenance houseplants that bring a touch of tropical beauty to any indoor space. One of the easiest ways to propagate new Schefflera plants is by rooting stem cuttings in water. If you’re looking to expand your plant collection or simply want a fun and easy gardening project, here’s how to root a Schefflera plant in water:

Step 1: Select a Healthy Stem Cutting

To propagate a Schefflera plant, you’ll need to start with a healthy stem cutting. Look for a stem that is about 4 to 6 inches long, has several leaves, and is free of disease or damage. Using sharp, clean scissors, make a clean cut just below a set of leaves.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Leaves

Once you’ve taken your stem cutting, remove the leaves from the bottom two inches of the stem. This will prevent the leaves from rotting in the water and encourage the plant to send out new roots.

Step 3: Place the Stem Cutting in Water

Fill a jar or vase with clean, room temperature water and place your stem cutting into the water, with the cut end submerged. Make sure that the leaves are not touching the water. You can also add a small amount of rooting hormone to the water to encourage root growth.

Step 4: Change the Water Regularly

In order to keep your Schefflera cutting healthy and encourage root growth, you’ll need to change the water in the jar regularly (about once a week). Rinse the stem cutting with clean water before placing it back in the jar.

Step 5: Wait for Roots to Form

Rooting a Schefflera plant in water can take several weeks to several months, depending on the size of the cutting and the conditions in your home. Be patient and don’t give up! Once you see roots beginning to emerge from the stem, you can transplant the cutting into soil.

Step 6: Plant the Cutting in Soil

Once your Schefflera cutting has developed a good root system (about 1 to 2 inches long), it’s ready to be planted in soil. Choose a well-draining pot and fill it with a high-quality potting mix. Make a hole in the soil that’s deep enough to hold the stem cutting and gently place the root ball into the hole. Firmly pack the soil around the stem to hold it in place.
