How to Rid Tomato Plants of Hornworms

Tomatoes are a favorite among gardeners due to their juicy, delicious fruit. However, they are also a favorite of the tomato hornworm. These green caterpillars can quickly destroy a tomato plant if left unchecked. Fortunately, there are several methods to rid tomato plants of hornworms:

1. Hand-picking

The easiest and most effective method to get rid of hornworms is by hand-picking them off the tomato plants. Wear gloves and inspect the plants daily, looking for the green caterpillars. If you find any, simply pluck them off and dispose of them. Be sure to check the undersides of the leaves and the soil around the base of the plant, as the caterpillars may be hiding there.

2. Use Beneficial Insects

Another effective method to rid tomato plants of hornworms is by introducing beneficial insects, such as parasitic wasps or ladybugs, to your garden. These insects prey on the hornworms and can help to reduce their population. You can either purchase beneficial insects from a garden store or attract them to your garden by planting herbs like dill or fennel.

3. Neem Oil

Neem oil is a natural and organic insecticide that is effective against hornworms. Mix one tablespoon of neem oil with a gallon of water, then spray the solution onto your tomato plants. Be sure to cover both the top and underside of the leaves, as well as the stems and fruit. Repeat this process every two weeks or after a heavy rainfall.

4. Bt Spray

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a naturally occurring bacteria that can kill hornworms. You can purchase Bt spray at any garden store and apply it according to the package instructions. Be sure to only spray the affected tomato plants as Bt can also harm beneficial insects.

5. Floating Row Covers

Floating row covers are a physical barrier that can prevent hornworms from accessing your tomato plants. Simply cover your plants with the row cover and secure it to the ground with stakes or bricks. This method can also protect your tomato plants from other pests such as aphids or flea beetles.

By using one or more of these methods, you can rid your tomato plants of hornworms and protect your juicy fruit from being destroyed. Remember to inspect your plants regularly and to choose the method that works best for you and your garden.
